New Design – Canine Haven

With several dogs and children this client required a practical solution.  The design utilised artificial turf to provide an effective space in the shady site.  Raised beds and a fruit and vegetable garden also featured in the design

You can find more details of the garden on it’s page here including the design video

New Design – Sweeping Journey

This 30 meter long narrow garden had been used for many games of football and rugby but now the children had grown the clients wanted a real garden to enjoy.

The brief was to create a design that made the most of the length of the garden while splitting the garden to add visual interest.

New Design – Country Style

This long garden belonged to a traditional Victorian villa in Cardiff and the brief was to provide a segmented garden with three areas and to improve the overall level of privacy as the garden was overlooked by neighbouring properties.

Winter Scent – Viburnum bodnantense Dawn

One of the best things about this time of the year is that plants with scent and flowers stand out because you’re just not expecting them.  Viburnum bodnantense ‘Dawn’ is one such plant.

Easy to grow and maintain it will get up to 8 -10 foot as a multi stemmed shrub or can be kept smaller if required.  The beautifully scented flowers appear sometimes as early as November and continue right through into the spring when the mid green foliage takes over.

Depending on the weather the plant can get quite nice autumn colour too before dropping it’s leaves.

‘Dawn’ works best against a dark background or as a focal point.  Position it in a spot that you walk past regularly or near a window or door to get the most of the heavenly scent.

The pictures above were taken in January and as you can see the flowers were really getting going.

New Design – Crescent Layers

This garden swept around two sides of a house in St Mellons, Cardiff.  A new conservatory had been added to the house and the client wanted a total reworking of the garden.  We designed a sequence of crescent shaped curved layers to provide a set of flowing forms around the house.

A patio sighted for the late afternoon and early evening sunshine was raised to catch the last rays of the sun and adjacent was a  small wildlife pond with an integrated and lit cascade.

New Design – Peaceful Retirement

Here’s the first of the new designs that we completed in 2011.  This garden for a couple approaching retirement reworked the space after a new conservatory was added to the house.  Using aged natural stone materials to blend with the architecture of the house and surrounding conservation area the design provided a relaxing, low maintenance space.

New Design – Gentle Journey

This gently curving design for a large suburban garden in St Mellons near Cardiff worked really well.  Originally a single space we created a garden with multiple sunny and shady spaces, making the most of the mature specimens that were already in the garden.

Spring Planting Combination – Pink and Blue

tulip-lithodora

Here’s a nice spring planting combination.  Tulipa ‘Pink Diamond’ with Lithodora ‘Heavenly Blue’.  There ia also Juniperus ‘Blue Star’ to the left of the photo too.  Lithodora is a great plant though it needs trimming every so often to stop it getting woody.  This combination was an experiment.  We’ll be adding more Pink Diamonds this autumn.

Site Visit – Fruit, Vegetable and Cutting Garden

p1000921 p1000917

Our client gets a lot of rabbits in their garden but was keen to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers for arranging.  We built them this large enclosure and planted the fruit last year.  Lots of species including summer and autumn raspberries, red, green and yellow gooseberries, red, white and blackcurrants, blueberries and more.  Elsewhere  in the garden we have planted apples, pears and quinces.  All the fruit beds have weed fabric fitted and mulch laid – so no weeds – low maintenance indeed.

This year we’ll be planting vegetables in the enclosure as well as annuals for flower arranging and for inclusion in the ornamental garden elsewhere on the site.

If you’d like to grow your own fruit, vegetables or flowers for cutting, maybe we can help.  Contact us here.
